Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this project is to raise public awareness of satellite positioning and increase the public's understanding of how satellite positioning is used in a wide range of scientific applications, for the benefit of society. In collaboration with the British National Space Centre (BNSC) the Royal Institute of Navigation (RIN) and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), it is proposed to develop an interactive display to be hosted within the National Space Centre, Leicester. In combination with specific public lectures, this will introduce the discipline of satellite positioning (including details of past, present and future systems), and describe how it is both used in science and how this benefits society. This project will develop and build on the public's general knowledge of GPS (Global Positioning System) and focus on areas of which the public is still largely unaware such as the high quality research being carried out on the scientific applications of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNS S). It is hoped that the public will gain a better insight into the type of research work currently ongoing, and be able to more clearly see the direct benefits to society that accrue as a result of this research.
