Climate change is likely to have an impact within the lifetime of today's school children, not only through the effects of changing weather patterns, but also in the way that society responds to counter the threat posed. This Public Awareness Project seeks to target dhildren of secondary school age to provide 'hands on' demonstrations of the mechanisms that give rise to climate change, their link to the use of energy by society and green solutions to the problem. The building and transport sectors will be used as familiar examples to demonstrate the key concepts involved in energy production, consumption and dependence; resource scarcity and pollution; strategies for minimising energy demand; and green methods of energy production and storage. Use will be made of working models of the key concepts (eg motors generators, photovoltaics, wind turbines, fuel cells) that can be used by children to demonstrate the key concepts in an interactive manner. Teaching materials will be prepared to back up the practical activities and a web site set up to provide further information, examples and assistance to children. Use will be made of an electric van to transport teaching materials to schools for two-day visits by an experienced researcher in support of the National Curriculum. A need from the local education authority for support in this area has been identified and a strategy for addressing this has been developed. The facility will be used to attend public events and lectures to address an adult audience.
