to excite year 11 students and the general public in the subject of materials science, through hands-on experiments and examples of current research in the area of sports equipment. to develop a series of four hands-on activities based on specific sports sectors linked to the research expertise in the Department of Metallurgy and Materials appropriate for use with GCSE students. to run three one day workshops for GCSE students on the engineering and science in sports equipment. to organise an event at a local shopping centre in the centre of Birmingham to showcase the role of Universities in pursuing, and the EPSRC in supporting, research, using sports materials as the example.
