Summary on Grant Application Form |
Novel scandium phosphates, phosphonates and silicates will be prepared via hydrothermal syntheses in the presence of inorganic and/or organic templating agents where appropriate. Scandium possesses very promising properties as a framework forming element, but has previously been largely overlooked due to cost. New sources of commercially available scandium open up the possibility of extended research. As a part of the project the speciation of scandium in a range of aqueous solutions will be examined. The resultant microporous solids will be structurally characterised by single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, solid state NMR (scandium-45 possesses favourable NMR properties) and high resolution electron microscopy and electron diffraction. The potential utility of scandium-containing solids as selective cation exchangers and molecular sieves will be measured.
