Summary on Grant Application Form
This is a proposal to support a six-month Sabbatical Leave granted by the University of Manchester to Ian Pratt-Hartmann. The proposed research, in the area of Computational Semantics, continues work funded by two EPSRC Visiting Fellowships awarded to Professor Nissim Francez in Manchester (GR/U07529) in 1997 and here in Edinburgh GR/R82838/01) in 2002. The first of these collaborations resulted in a systematic account of the semantics of temporal prepositions in English. The goal of the research proposed here is to combine the results of this earlier account with techniques from model-theory and computational complexity theory in order to characterize the expressive power of temporal prepositional constructions in English. That is, we propose to chart the logical resources which a certain fragment of natural language places at its speakers' disposal. This proposed research is closely related to recent work by Dr. Pratt-Hartmann on the computational complexity of other (non-temporal) natural language constructions.
