Wiithin the EU / FP 6, several networks have been initiated in the field of wood in construction. We at Imperial College and The Univversity of N. Wales, Bangor University have so far managed to keep abreast of the developments and have been involved in the initiation of a major EOI called Durawood . This incoporates 5 possible projects in the field of timber durability and preservation. At the same time a consortium of mainly industrial European networks have come together under an umbrella network called Innovawood . The network's aims are stated as Towards an intergrated European research and training area for forest,wood and funniture industries They have submitted a major proposal to the EU aimed at managing any future EU research in the sector. These two proposals are perfectly compatible and our intergrated project is designed to fit into the overall Innovawood programme. lnnovawood is currently appointing a project manager to coordinate the EU programmes. ln the past it has been possible for European Universities to keep a watching brief on the activities of this network but now it is essential to play an active part. All the key European academic players are joining Innovawood and participating in the envisaged FP6 developments. In addition if we are to maintain our proactive position in the Durawood proposals we need to attend and help organise all the envisaged project development meetings. ln this way we intend to play an active role in the Innovawood network and lead the proposals within the durability field under the Durawood EOLAII these proposals are related to our current STI project on Sustainable Wood Preservation
