Summary on Grant Application Form
The work proposes to generate nanoscale (20-200nm) regions of ferroelectric material thorugh the in-situ annealing of self-assembled metal or metal oxide particles with back electrodes. Firstly metal or metal oxide nanoparticles will be formed using techniques that have been championed in the literature, before they are encapsulated to produce a self-assembled monolayer. This monolayer will then be annealed to induce a reaction with the backelectrode (titanium or titania) and finally annealed to produce a ferroelectric phase. The materials of interest are PbTi03, formed using Pb nanoparticles and PZT (PbZrTi03) formed using PZT nanoparticles. The nanparticles will be encapsualted at various stages of growth to generate a variable size range in order that the ferroelectric properties of the materials can be investigated for differing sizes of ferroelectric cell. Ferroelectricity will be determined using piezoforce microscopy and material characteristics will be determined with SFEG SEM and XRD.
