This Is a proposal for a platform grant to underpin the photonic crystal research at the University of Bath. The substantial research momentum, wide international recognition, and large number of collaborations, are placing demands upon the group's funding and resources which cannot easily be met by regular research grants. As usual under these circumstances, the funding is missing for staff between projects or contracts, for the many Invited conference trips, for attracting visitors and Inviting seminar speakers, for collaborative visits to other groups and for pilot studies in new areas.
