The chiral non-racemic ansa metallocenes are excellent catalysts for a number of transformations, but a number of problems associated with them preclude their widespread use. The challenge being addressed in this proposal is the design of group 4 metal complexes which have the structure and functionality of the metallocenes but which are directly synthesised in chiral non-racemic form, are readily modified for steric and electronic tuning, and most importantly in which the chirality of the catalyst is very well expressed in the active site. The ligand designs are based on modular combinations of readily accessible chiral units (such as oxazolines and biaryls) and other building blocks (such as Cp, anisole and pyridine ligands). Alkyl, amide and halide complexes will be synthesised by standard methods. The complexes will be tested as catalysts for organic transformations; we have chosen a combination of relatively straightforward applications (imine reduction, alkene hydrogenation) which will allow us to rapidly assess the effectiveness of the new catalysts, and more challenging transformations (Pauson-Khand, carbomagnesiation) for which the discovery of efficient and readily available new catalysts is an exciting prospect. Our key aim is to deliver catalysts of proven ability that users could apply to new and emerging transformations.
