Summary on Grant Application Form
The principle aim of the project is to develop new theory for self-evolving software systems within the context of autonomic computing. A prototype framework of self-evolving software systems will be implemented based upon this theory and evaluation of the implementation will be fed back to refine the theory. The project will determine whether (i) the concerns and requirements of the various stakeholders of a software system may be expressed in a form amenable to the machine inference of their optimal compromise; and (ii) this compromise may be used to guide the dynamic optimisation of a system within the space of possibilities determined by a virtual market of available system components. The goal is to enable a potentially diverse range of software systems to evolve automatically. An agent-based approach will not be adopted but artificial intelligence techniques, such as machine inference and evolutionary algorithms, will be employed to automate the processes of software evolution encapsulating state of the art and best practice wherever practicable.
