The research project is to undertake fully quantum calculations of the effects of phonons in models of manganites and fullerides, by applying the numerical renormalization group technique together with dynamical mean field theory. The numerical renormalization group method will be extended to incorporate the coupling to local quantum spins in order to describe the physics of manganite compounds.The calculations will be directed towards addressing the following fundamental questions on the physics of these systems: What is the nature of the crossover from normal metallic Fermi-liquid behaviour to the behaviour in the small polaron regime as the strength of the electron-phonon interaction is increased? In what parameter regimes do gaps or pseudogaps develop in the excitation spectra? If gaps develop are there polaronic sub-bands within the gap? What are the combined effects of strong electron-electron correlations and strong electron-phonon interactions on the superconductivity of the fullerides?
