Summary on Grant Application Form
This project will extend the CFD based aeroelastic prediction tools to realistic aircraft geometries. Developments on grid generation from Bristol and information transfer from Glasgow will be brought together to provide a time marching capability for this problem. The Hopf bifurcation technique will be extended to the complete aircraft problem. Then, a free flight 6 D-o-F model will be included for both the time marching and Hopf approaches to allow the calculation of flight dynamics instabilities for flexible aircraft. The results for a standard list of test cases will be evaluated with those from the Bristol and Manchester projects to assess the range of applicability. The developed methods will be applied to two problems to assess the range of influence of nonlinear aerodynamics. First, linear certification criteria will be evaluated against nonlinear predictions. Secondly, the use of fast flutter predictions for aeroelastic design will be considered.
