Summary on Grant Application Form
Microscopy is the principal tool for developing a better understanding of concrete deterioration and for visualising the effects of repair. The Concrete Durability Group at Imperial College has a dedicated scanning electron microscope, but has not, until very recently, been equipped for optical microscopy. The Group recently purchased an optical (polarising light) microscope as part of a new EPSRC project concerned with building stone consolidation. The Group now wishes to apply this microscope in current and future projects concerned with concrete durability since optical microscopy offers many important insights and a degree of convenience not possible with scanning electron microscopy. The barrier to doing this is that Imperial does not have the equipment, nor until recently the expertise, necessary to produce suitable thin-section specimens from concrete. Dr Martin Head, who joined the Group in January, is very experienced in the intricacies of producing thin-section specimens of concrete. This proposal is for the provision of equipment to produce thin-section specimens of concrete for optical microscopy. It will be used to enhance three current EPSRC projects and will form an important part of future EPSRC project proposals.
