Summary on Grant Application Form
The safety and reliability of ships is much lower than that of land-based structures or aeroplanes, as they are complicated structures, subject to a wide variety of loads. Transferring freight movement from roads to waterborne transport will improve the sustainability of Europe's transportation systems, but foreseeable accidents will not encourage freight agencies to consider this change. Advanced structural analysis now allows designers and ship managers to consider the future reliability of vessels, to further improve their safety. Research into advanced structural reliability and advanced structural analysis of marine vehicles is essential to ensure public and commercial confidence and to allow other advances in new vessel forms and materials. Europe has many world-class experts in this field, but it is necessary to combine these pockets of excellence , so that they work in an integrated programme of research. It is proposed to establish a Network of Excellence with related Integrated Projects, covering all the main shipbuilding countries in Europe.
