Summary on Grant Application Form
The purpose of this proposal is to provide funding to allow Dr Olav Helleso to conduct research into nano- and micro-particle trapping and manipulation on planar lightwave circuits during his period of sabbatical leave at the Optoelectronics Research Centre at Southampton University. This period will extend from September 2002 until August 2003 and his salary, accommodation, and travel costs to the UK, will be borne by the University of Tromso, where he is an Associate Professor. His experience in glass optical waveguide and device optimisation is complementary to the ORC's expertise in novel materials, nanoparticle manipulation, and device characterisation. He is engaged in establishing research into microparticle manipulation at the University of Tromso, while the ORC is establishing programmes of particle manipulation for sorting biological molecules and microsphere resonator coupled waveguide structures for nonlinear and telecommunications applications. Dr Helleso will contribute expertise in waveguide design and fabrication to both these programmes, helping to initiate them and acting to foster cross-fertilisation of ideas between the two programmes. His particular interests are in waveguide device design to control the position of particles on a surface. Our aim is to develop long-term collaboration with Dr Helleso through mechanisms such as the European Framework Programmes in which Norway may participate as an associated country.
