The project will be concerned with the rational design and synthesis of a series of novel ligands for metal free asymmetric catalysis utilising the alpha-effect to accelerate catalytic turn over. The initial studies will provide the first examples of acyclic ligands capable of iminium ion catalysis, a vibrant and exciting area of contemporary asymmetric catalysis, and provide a platform for the remainder of the project. Development of a more rigorous understanding of face-face pi-pi interactions will then follow using both physical and chemical techniques to develop our insight into this fascinating and potentially significant area of chemistry. The work will then continue with the evolution of a novel molecular scaffold for the catalysis of the asymmetric Michael reaction, drawing inspiration from previous findings on the effects of ligand structure on catalytic turnover and asymmetric induction. Finally we will then explore the possibility of developing novel chiral DMAP derivatives based on our simple and easily accesible catalyst structure, expanding the portfolio of reactions that can be undertaken using our system.Keywords: Chemistry, Organic, Asymmetric Synthesis, Non-covalent Interactions, Alpha-effect.
