Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is aimed at developing a simple processing route to a new class of composite in which both phases are continuous in all three dimensions throughout the microstructure. Known as interpenetrating composites, they offer potential as materials with truly multifunctional properties; each phase contributing its own characteristics to the performance of the composite. Whilst the proposed work is primarily focused on learning how to tailor the structure of the ceramic foams that will form the basis behind both metal-ceramic and polymer-ceramic interpenetrating composites, the work will also seek to perform infiltrations using molten metals and polymers. The results, in terms of the quality of the bodies produced and their properties, will be used to optimise the initial structure of the ceramic foams. Characterisation will include both evaluation of the structure of the composites and of the resultant properties. The work will be primarily based in the Ceramic Research Group at Loughborough University, but will also involve up to four other research groups, both at Loughborough and elsewhere.
