Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is an investigation of shock-wave/boundary-layer interactions at high Mach number. The objective is to focus on three-dimensional interactions, which have received little attention in any systematic manner. The basic test model is axisymmetric, guaranteeing that the reference to flow is highly two-dimensional. This uses a hollow circular cylinder, with its axis aligned parallel with the flow, essentially the axisymmetric equivaler a flat plate. The shock interaction is generated by an external cowl, wrapped around the cylindrical centrebody. Positioned concentrically the cowl/centrebody provides an axisymmetric interaction and three-dimensionality is produced by offset of the cowl, enabling a controlled graduated variation and the possibility of imposing 'weak' and 'strong' three-dimensional interactions. The study combines both CFD and experiment, with CFD having an important role both in aiding the model design decisions and providing final, detailed comparison with experiment.
