Conjugated semiconducting polymer light emitting diodes (LEDs) and field-effect-transistors (FETs) are one of the most exciting emerging technologies. However, there are still major improvements to be made in device performance. Also many of the fundamental questions about these materials and the physics of device operation remain unresolved. This Fast Grant proposal is to conduct electrical and optical studies of conjugated semiconducting polymers and their devices. A range of equipment is sought to pursue research in this area over the next few years. Also two specific projects are contained in this proposal. The first is on emission, transport and injection in conjugated polymers containing emissive polymer dopants. This involves investigating the transfer of the excited state, measuring the mobility and injected current where the dopant ads as a hole trap, identifying whether these systems form bicontinuous networks, relating the mobility and injected current to LED performance, and relating the transient eledroluminescent emission to mobility. The second is on charge transport in conjugated polymer FETs. This involves constructing p-type and n-type polyfluorene copolymer FETs, identifying the effect of gate insulator deposition on polymer conformation and packing, comparing the FET mobility to the bulk mobility, and using new crossfnkable polymers to vary the gate insulator and solvent.
