Design of experiments has not always kept up with modern methods of modelling data from experiments. This OTG will fund a visit to Brazil for the investigator to work with colleagues on 2 different projects on Bayesian design for experiments in biology. In collaboration with L.A. Trinca at UNESP-Botucatu, Bayesian design methods will be used for fractional polynomial response surfaces. Fractional polynomial models are a useful alternative to polynomials for modelling response surfaces from data from experiments in, for example, food technology and bioprocessing. However, the standard response surface designs are not appropriate for fitting these models. Bayesian designs will be developed for experiments with several quantitative factors. In collaboration with J.S.S. Bueno Filho at Universidade Federal de Lavras, Bayesian methods will be used to develop block designs for field experiments where the treatments are genetically related and modelled as random effects. Depending on the degree of relatedness, designs for fixed treatments might be optimal, or might not. Usually the family structure is known, but the relevant variances of random effects are not. Bayesian optimal designs will be developed when a prior distribution is used on this parameter.
