Kinetic resolution of racemates is an important method for the production of enantiomerically-pure compounds. Dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR) is possible when the chiral starting material racemises rapidly but when racemisation of the product is very slow. Membrane separations in organic solvents are becoming possible due to newly available membranes. There is dear potential for combining membrane and DKR technologies. We propose an entirely novel protocol, Membrane Enhanced Dynamic Kinetic Resolution (MEDKR), which simultaneously: (i) obviates the need for the enantioselective and racemisation DKR catalysts to tolerate each other, (ii) allows facile separation of enantiomerically enriched products from both the DKR catalysts; thereby substantially increasing both the scope and the real-world applicability of DKR processes. Our proposal rests on the principle of membrane-separation of higher molecular weight species (the catalysts) from each other and from lower molecular weight species (the substrates and solvents), both during and after reaction. We intend to construct novel membrane reactors and test their utilities for DKR applied to chiral alcohols, acid derivatives, and amines.
