The continuous advancement in technology for Systems-on-Chips (SoCs) results in novel challenges for system development: previously used debug strategies for hardware and application software development have either become obsolete, unreliable or Insufficient. The purpose of this proposed study is to investigate new efficient approaches to support hardware and application software development for embedded SoCs with multiple processor cores. Building on the relevant day-to-day development experience of the investigator and the collaborators, the proposal aims to identify generic feature sets for debug interfaces on processor cores, other modules, and interconnection structures in complex SoCs. While debugging SoCs with a number of diverse cores and modules is a novel challenge, new algorithms have to be developed that not only provide debugging of each SoC component on its own, but also take into account that these components might heavily interact and Influence each other during the operation. To implement the devised algorithms and to provide a 'real world' test bed, it is proposed to develop a prototype software that serves as a common client to control and observe the debug interfaces on one SoC platform.
