Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal seeks to set up a Network to promote research into the synthesis, fabrication, testing, applications and modelling of auxetic materials. Given the diversity of current UK activities and potential applications, as well as the relatively small size of the UK academic community in the field, the formation of an auxetics network is desirable to focus UK activities and to align these activities within the International arena. The Network will include industrial collaborators who will have access to the latest developments in auxetic material research and will provide the academic members with an industrial perspective on the research, promoting applications-based projects. Exchange of personnel (especially research students) to share facilities and expertise is a key objective of this proposal, as is the generation of research proposals to allow the Network to achieve self-sufficiency after the initial funding period. Auxetic materials have been shown to offer huge potential through measured enhancements in properties such as indentation resistance, low velocity impact resistance, fracture toughness and energy absorption. An intergrated series of research proposals should allow these benefits (and other potential but as yet untested property enhancements) to be fully understood and exploited.
