Summary on Grant Application Form
The design of informative, sensitive multiplex nanoscale detectors is possible using SERRS but implementation is severely limited by a lack of understanding of the effect. A combined suspension chemistry and surface TEM/Raman mapping approach is proposed to provide a practical understanding and a basis for theoretical advancement. The mapping method uses labelled, derivatised TEM grids which can be separately placed in high performance electro-microscopes and Raman spectrometers. The suspension studies enable an understanding of the effect in a 3 dimensional environment and the mapping method allows the detailed examination of the structure of individual particles and rapid screening of a large number of particles to obtain statistically relevant numbers. The research has broader implications for the study of surface chemistry and dye/plasmon interactions on nanoscale metal particles.
