|
The demonstrated ability to completely sequence individual plant and animal genomes is without question a major achievement, but it is merely an entry into the post-genomic age of applied genomics and proteomics. Understanding the structure and function of these genes and the proteins that they encode will potentially revolutionize our understanding of human, animal and plant disease. However, pervasive real-time application of that understanding is what will revolutionize diagnosis, treatment and prevention. Our research vision is of a communicating interface between the physical and biological worlds; the nanoengineered Biological-PhysicalInformation Interface. Development of robust, long-lasting or easily regenerated interfaces with sophisticated functionality, and their integration into robust and economically viable systems will allow us to harness the virtual information of the human genome for economic and social benefit. The purpose of the proposed Workshop is to provide a clearer understanding of the component parts of such interfaces.
