Wave propagation along an inhomogeneous elastic wave-guide will be considered. The case in which the dispersion curves corresponding to diffen Lamb waves is emphasised. An asymptotic procedure based on two expansions will be developed. The first of these, applicable to the regions associated with those for which the two dispersion curves are not close, will be constructed by the standard WKB procedure. Derivation of the sec( valid in the region of our particular interest, i.e. those corresponding to points at which the two dispersion branches either cross or become close, represents the essence of our analysis and will require very delicate treatment. The efficiency of these procedures will be demonstrated for a variety realistic types of inhomogeneity with numerous applications, and detail the influence of pre-stress.
