Dynamical systems with Lie group symmetry arise in the study of natural phenomena.Equilibrium and periodic solutions for such systems have been widely studied, and recently there has been considerable progress on the ergodic and mixing properties of chaotic dynamical systems with symmetry. However, there has been little work on stronger statistical properties such as rapid decay of correlations, central limit theorems and invariance principles (almost sure approximation by Brownian motion) for such systems.Motivated by the phenomenon of Brownian-like' hypermeander' of spiral waves in excitable media, we have begun the study of statistical properties in symmetric dynamical systems. So far our results have been formulated mainly for hyperbolic (Axiom A) base dynamics. This project is largely concerned w the generalisation to nonuniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphisms and flows. Such generalisations are necessary for, and have immediate implications for, the analysis of chaotic dynamics of spiral waves and scrolls.
