Summary on Grant Application Form
The Principal Investigator (PI) plans to participate for two or three periods, each of two to three weeks' duration, in the 2002-03 Program on 'Commutative Algebra' at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute at Berkeley, USA. (The visits to MSRI have to be in Sheffield University vacations, as the PI is Head of Department; a continuous visit of two months' duration is not possible.) The PI intends to seize the opportunities afforded by these visits for sustained thought about (a) his own ongoing projects related to the themes of the Program, and (b) central problems expounded at the Program by the world's experts in the subject; the PI expects to begin, during these visits, some potentially fruitful collaborations with leading researchers. Topics on which the PI expects to work include (1) applications of graded-injective module theory over a certain skew polynomial ring to questions about linear growth of primary decompositions of Frobenius powers of ideals, (2) attempts to understand better the associated primes of local cohomology modules, and (3) attempts to understand more about the graded components of graded local cohomology modules. However, the Pt also expects to be inspired to work in other areas by the experts visiting the MSRI.
