Email can be extremely effective as a medium of communication. Unfettered by normal social constraints, it tends to promote free and frank discussion betweer people and groups and, indeed, to form new groups. Equally, its very lack of social sensitivity can be detrimental, fostering serious misunderstandings or serving to amplify social constraints on people who already know one another. This proposal is to develop a design framework for the construction of more effective Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) systems. It will integrate CMC research on Common Ground, Social Identity and privacy and construct a test-bed CMC system to demonstrate and refine the framework. The key factors are configurability, to allow discussion group members to flexibly define and project the common social identity, knowledge of the composition and identity of a group, to know who is in receipt of messages, maintenance of reference, to build knowledge in common, and privacy, allowing individuals to manage access to their individual identities. The major deliverables are:1) A design framework for building social identity and privacy management into CMC systems.2) A demonstrator CMC system, structured according to rules embedded in the framework, to establish and promote discussion group activities and without undermining personal privacy. http://www.bath.ac.uk/comp-sci/hci/projects/indentitydesign.html
