Summary on Grant Application Form
Previous research by the applicant resulted in a biologically plausible computational model of the mechanisms underlying the human ability to imitate behaviours demonstrated by others. This model has been tested in simulation, and has produced plausible explanations and testable predictions. Tt proposed research will move beyond mere simulation and investigate the application of this model to real robots. The aim is to equip robots with the capacity to imitate human motor behaviours, including moving around in an office environment, and grasping, carrying, and placing objects. The proposed research will investigate appropriate behaviour and behaviour-state description schemes that will allow both the execution of a behaviour the robot, as well as its recognition when an equivalent behaviour is performed by a human demonstrator. It will also address the complexities introduced by the fact that, during imitation, the demonstrator and the imitator have different viewpoints, as well as different body morphologies and capabilities.
