|
Mathematical knowledge underpins advances in many other fields. The varied nomenclatures and symbology of mathematics, combined with its rich structures, make it an area in which it is becoming ever more difficult to manage the quantity of high quality mathematics being produced. A 5`h Framework Network has been agree by the EU to perform initial investigations into all aspects of the management of mathematical knowledge, with the aim of producing detailed plans for research and development work to be performed under the auspices of the 6th Framework. The topics under investigation include: mathematical meta-data, copyright and intellectual property issues; migration and classification tools for transferring paper-based information to useful digital formats; the varied presentational requirements of the different user classes for mathematics; formal tools to underpin mathematical knowledge management; search engines and mathematical notations.
