Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal brings together the complementary research strengths of Salford, Glasgow and Cambridge Universities to a single focussed project. The research builds on collaboration already established within an EPSRC Network (on Nonlinear Magneto-optics). To date, implementations of non-reciprocal magneto-optic devices such as isolators and circulators are based on bulk optical components and are relatively bulky and expensive due to the manpower required for assembly. The theme of this proposal is to develop, characterise and demonstrate a novel technology of monolithically integrating magneto-optic devices into planar III-V semiconductor optoelectronics. Specifically, we shall design and fabricate devices based on epitaxial deposition of magneto-optical layers on semiconductor substrates. We will produce applicable device demonstrators in polarisation mode conversion and optical isolation with the goal of realising an semiconductor diode laser with an integrated optical isolator.
