Summary on Grant Application Form
The central aim of the proposal is to investigate the various different methods for creating waveguides in lithium niobate and determine the best method. The methods which we will examine are proton exchange, soft proton exchange and reverse proton exchange. Once we can fabricate waveguides using these methods we will evaluate their pefromance and decide upon the best process. Using the optimised process we will then concentrate on producing planar waveguides suitable for use in optical parametric generation experiments. In addition we will look at developing methods for the characterisation of the waveguides in both the linear and nonlinear regime. The central nonlinear technique will be parametric fluorescence will lead naturally on to looking at the generation of nonclassical light from such samples and whether or not they can be used for quantum cryptography.
