Sustainable manufacture will be an important consideration for the next generation manufacturing. This research brings together a multi-disciplinary research team to investigate the use of sustainable lubricants, vegetable oil based cutting fluids, in modern metal cutting processes. The multidisciplinary team includes expertise in the field of cutting tools, cutting processes, lubrication and microbiology, and thus, the approach ensures all the major factors in the cutting process are critically examined in a coordinated and structured manner. The approach is to develop new formulations of cutting fluids and examine critically, not only the chemistry, but also the biological issues of such a degradation in order to ensure that the developed lubricants meet health and safety requirements. The mechanisms at play when such lubricants are in use will be critically investigated with the chemistry of the lubricants being examined from the outset and changes that take place throughout the process determined. In addition the approach will examine the recycling of the lubricant. At the same time the wear mechanisms, in play, on the cutting tools will be examined in detail to link with the chemistry of the lubricant. The drilling, reaming and tapping processes will be cutting processes in focus with solid tools including coated cemented carbides, micrograin cemented carbides and cermets. Routes to, and mechanisms and treatments for, re-use, recycling and reformulation of the cutting fluids will be established.
