Many environmental benefits accrue by increasing the use of lime in modern building construction including a reduction of both energy in manufacture and C02 emissions, recycling of materials and load enhancing performance. Lime mortar is softer than the masonry around it so when movement does occur it is the lime that accommodates it rather than the masonry that cracks. Moreover its use as a sustainable material for thin-skinned buildings would alleviate the use of expansion joints, the bane of many architects lives. Despite these clear advantages, the construction industry lacks information on the use of lime mortars. This program of research seeks a fundamental understanding of the marked differences in the plastic behaviour of OPC and hydraulic lime by creating a multi-disciplinary partnership involving industry and academe. The ultimate aim is the production of design rules and codes of practice for the construction industry to give specifier confidence for the application of these products.
