This project combines expertise from microengineering, biomaterials, molecular biology, surface modification and vascular medicine in realising the formation of a multi-disciplinary team combining physics and biology and addressing healthcare needs specifically in wound healing.It is proposed that using microengineering techniques, novel soft lithographic scaffolds may be fabricated. These will be used to form complex 3dimensional matrices on which the regulation of cell repair and replication may be monitored. This study will initially be directed towards investigatir the role of the extracellular matrix on wound healing. Parameters such as materials, surface topography and the manner by which geometrical fea (eg. area and shape) of microengineered structures modulate the cellular response to soluble regulators will be investigated. The effect of external stimuli (such as mechanical deformation of the scaffold) on cell proliferation and orientation may also be monitored to gain an insight into physiolog effects which may effect cell contact guidance and matrix dependence.The clinical objective of this study is to provide a means (e.g topical application of a bio-inductive graft) which will kick start the wound healing process.
