The aim of this project is to lay the foundation for a generic technology for the manufacture of low-cost thermoelectric devices via lithographic printing and reel to reel vacuum deposition. The project will focus on two specific designs of structure: one relies on thermoelectrically printed inks, and the other on masking inks to image thermoelectric materials deposited via vacuum deposition. Offset lithographic printing and reel to reel vacuum deposition are low-cost high-volume production processes, offering order of magnitude speed and cost reductions over conventional production technologies. This project aims to develop and evaluate thermocouples for sensing temperature, and thermopiles for low power generation applications. The first is considered to have a high likelihood of success, and the second to be more speculative and adventurous. An additional outcome of this work could well be a process enabling vacuum deposition to be used for producing electrical interconnect.
