Summary on Grant Application Form
Aperiodic Order' refers to the as yet poorly understood geometry of the atomic structure of the recently discovered 'quasicrystals': minerals which have suficiently regular atomic structure that they give sharp diffraction patterns, but which cannot be modelled on classical periodic lattices. It is a field of muc ;urrent interaction between pure mathematicians, physicists and crystalographers. This project builds on recent mathematical advances of both the PI an 3thers and seeks to bring new and far more powerful K-theoretic, geometric and algebra-topological techniques to bear than have been used in the past. In )articular, it aims to build and apply new and more subtle geometric and topological invariants, reinterpret various established ad hoc results in a comrr system, and provide the next set of tools to be used in tackling the long term goals of classification and physical interpretation of aperiodically ordered patt
