Summary on Grant Application Form
The project will investigate how the emission of SF6 from High Voltage electric power equipment, particularly circuit breakers, might be cost effectively monitored using mass spectrometry techniques to sample substation atmospheres for SF6 contamination. This would form a means of encouraging the reduction of such emissions in order to reduce environmental threat which they are claimed to produce. The project would be pursued via four work packages:-1. Consideration of the mass spectrometry of SF6 and relevant halogen fragments: 2. Laboratory based experiments to establish the various SF6, PTFE and other fragments produced during fault current arcing in model circuit breakers and to evaluate the sensitivity of a mass spectrometer for detecting low levels (ppm) of SF6 and other fragments present in the atmosphere of a circuit breaker research laboratory: 3. Substation based site tests to evaluate the suitablility of using mass spectrometer in a real substation environment for general atmospheric sampling to detect SF6 levels of emission plus other fragments: 4. Evaluation of the effectiveness of mass spectrometry for detecting substation wide SF6 concentrations and thus of telemetry to give early warning of leakages.
