Summary on Grant Application Form
This project is concerned with the geometrical structures that arise in string theory and with the quantum corrections, due to instantons and to membranes of various dimensions, that deform this geometry. Insights into this structure will be gained by considering the different formulations and limits of string theory. The main topics to be considered are the quantum corrections to the quaternionic Kahler geometry of the hypermultiplet moduli space and nonperturbative aspects of the moduli space of heterotic string theory. It is through an improved understanding of heterotic string theory that one may reasonably hope to make realistic contact with the experimental world of elementary particle interactions.
