Scheduling represents a huge class of difficult real world problems that are of significant importance in a wide range of industries and service sectors. Examples of application areas range from maintenance scheduling in the electricity industry to train driver scheduling in the public services and from sports scheduling to machine scheduling on the factory floor. This fellowship will bring together the considerable research expertise of Prof Dror and the Automated Scheduling, Optimisation and Planning Research Group at the University of Nottingham to systematically investigate and explore the duality relationship for machine scheduling. This 3 month investigation will consider practical as well as theoretical considerations and is being supported by a local company (Sherwood Press Ltd) who have the kind of difficult machine scheduling problem that is represented by the research issues that we will tackle. We will also explore other avenues of related research interest during Prof Dror's visit. In particular we will explore the relationship between the work carried out in the core 3 month programme and rostering and timetabling problems. One of the objectives of this fellowship is to pump prime further collaboarative work between the two universities and we would hope to use this fellowship as the basis of a joint EPSRC/NSF research programme in the field.
