Microstructured fibres exhibit a range of optical properties not possible in conventional optical fibres, and a number of these appear particularly attractive for high power delivery applications. They offer a simplified route towards the fabrication of single-mode fibres with a large mode area, and this advantage is most striking at short wavelengths or for broadband applications. In addition, they can be made from a single material, such as undoped silica glass, which opens up the possibility of transmission in the UV. Despite these potential advantages, the practical aspects of using these fibres for high power delivery have not yet been assessed.The research programme will consist of fabrication, modelling and characterisation of a range of large mode area fibre structures. Microstructured fibres will be compared in performance to conventional large mode area fibres, which will provide a benchmark to assess the advantages of these novel fibres. Investigations into the power delivery potential of photonic bandgap fibres will also be conducted, and their practicality for industrial applications assessed. The continued feedback from our industrial collaborators and our own characterisation programme will allow us to develop the design, fabrication and understanding of these fibre types based on the requirement to deliver high power laser radiation for industrial applications.
