Summary on Grant Application Form
This submission is a part of a LINK collaborative project with 2 industrial SME partners. The objectives of the overall project lie in the development o lithography-free techniques for photonic waveguide and circuit definition, complete with fibre-placement and motherboard-level hybridised integration, culminating in the specification of a laser processing work platform. The Aston project lies at the more fundamental end of the set of activities, and seeks to investigate and develop femtosecond pulse inscription techniques for waveguide and wavefuide/grating devices, including novel dual UV/femtosecond pulse inscription concepts. Specific devices - optical add/drop multiplexers and an optical motherboard for advanced all-optical sigr processing functions - will be conceived and tested. The goal of the project is to establish the inscription technology, and a range of novel approache are included. Evaluation of the outputs will be made using existing telecomms testbeds at Aston, and the project will also consider the uses of the technology to produce new sensor devices. The Aston programme seeks to build upon recent new directions established in the laser processing are and to address, for the first time, practical application to devices.
