ROFMOD is a three-year research programme, in collaboration with BAES, BPR (Broadcast Projects Research) and Snell & Wilcox (under the DTI/LINK OSDA call) to develop a fibre/free space network for high data rate communications (>250 Mb/s) in both indoor and outdoor wireless applications, and for mobile data platforms. The field of fibre radio research is flourishing, and is now ripe for commercial exploitation. We aim to upon our previous achievements in fibre radio (which have demonstrated remote up-conversion schemes using mm-wave MMICs) to help develc fibre radio system demonstrator for mobile digital TV cameras and wireless studios. Our contribution to this proposal will be in two main areas. Firstly, we will investigate and develop new communication protocols and modulation formats for 60 GHz fibre radio that are tolerant of multipath and also fibre dispersion. In particular, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) techniques will be considered for use within the fibre radio network. The work will be harmonised with current and future international standards. Secondly, we aim to develop 60 GHz data terminals (with c rates > 250 Mb/s) that are compact enough to be mounted on TV broadcast cameras and are low cost. These will be developed using a hybrid gl silicon integration technique and 60 GHz MMICs.
