The project is to capitalise on the construction of two 8m diameter running tunnels for the Channel Tunnel Rail Link which are to pass beneath a number of piled structures. There is little knowledge available about how piled structures respond to ground movements caused by tunnelling, while the continued development of urban infrastructure means that instances of new tunnels affecting piled structures is steadily increasing. Two new piles fitted with instrumentation for determining base load, skin friction, lateral deflections and pile head deformation are to be installed above the new tunnels at carefully chosen positions. These will be loaded and monitored as the tunnels are constructed beneath them to observe deformations and changes in base load and redistribution of skin friction. At least three piled structures of different structural forms will be monitored to observe their response to tunnelling using precise levelling, taping and total station observations. Additionally it is essential to understand how ground unaffected by piles responds to the tunnelling operations and so four arrays of shallow surface monitoring points and one array of subsurface instruments will be monitored. The resulting unique data from these three components of the field resarch will be analysed in conjunction with the tunnelling operations, compared with results from small-scale model testing and used to validate numerical analyses to provide guidelines for the prediction of piled foundation response to tunnelling.
