The proposal is for a fundamental investigation into a method for simulating macro and micro crack closure effects in a three-dimensional numerical material model for cementitious composite materials, such as concrete and mortar. The work aims to enable the simulation of certain important aspects of behaviour, such as aggregate interlock and the opening and closing of compression and tension cracks, which can have a major influence on behaviour but which are not simulated well, if at all, by existing models. The inability of existing approaches to simulate these key characteristics of behaviour is the primary problem being addressed in this research. The work will involve an investigation into the use of the new approach in numerical material models and will comprise experimental and theoretical components. The final product will be computer code for the model implemented in a general-purpose finite element analysis program. The proposal builds upon novel work undertaken during a recent Royal Society Industry Fellowship that involved collaboration between the applicant and the company FEA Ltd. The project will also receive added value from the involvement of the applicant in a new European project on the integrity assessment of large concrete dams. The final product should be useful to engineers and scientists who design and assess structures.
