Summary on Grant Application Form
The project is concerned with the development of a new microgrid technique to measure and fully quantify, with high resolution, the deformation of materials at high temperature across the length scales. The technique, as well as the experimental procedure described in this proposal, is aimed at linking the microscopic behaviour of materials to their macroscopic response under thermo-mechanical and multi-axial loading. Grids covering large areas of microstructure with a 75 nm pitch will allow strain measurements at both the macroscopic scale and the scale of dislocation cells in steels. The quantification of both the heterogeneous distribution of intra-granular deformation and sliding at grain/phase boundaries will lead to a breakthrough in the understanding of the physical mechanisms responsible for the microstructural deformation of metals deformed at high temperature. Microstructure evolution will also be followed as a function of the local state of deformation and orientation in the material in order to generate unique experimental data for nucleation and development of recrystallisation which will form the basis of a new physical insight to introduce into microstructural models aimed at predicting the macroscopic response of materials under conditions of large strain plasticity at elevated temperature.
