The proposed research is to construct a 3-d finite element numerical model of chemical diffusion through skin. The physical make up of skin is such the diffusion occurs only in the small regions between nearly impenetrable, approximately hexagonal blocks, stacked in layers. This structure has never before been modelled in its entirity and in detail using 3-d calculations. Furthermore, the resulting computational code will make use of adaptive meshes in space and time and will allow the solutions to be computed to within a specified accuracy by life scientists who need to simulate dermal absorption without actual experiments. The complexity and detail of the model used will mean that in order to obtain solutions quickly, parallel computing techniques will be used. This project has the intention of providing a numerical code that can be run by experimental scientists through a problem solving environment, to give both usable and useful results which will eventufly be compared to experimental results generated in linked projects.
