Summary on Grant Application Form
Ferromagnetic oxides involve new science and offer scope for new devices. Many are half metallic ferromagnets. The full spin polarisation offered by such materials leads to radical new physics and device realisation. Important examples include cubic manganites (e.g. (LaSr)Mn03), magnetite, Fe304, and wide band semiconductors, ZnO and TiO, that become half metallic ferromagnets when doped with transition metals, Co or Ni.The energies of inter-band and intea-band electronic band transitions of these materials are in the range 1eV to 4.5eV and may be accessed using magneto-optics. We shall make extensive do Faraday studies as a function of temperature. We shall study the transmission spectra following a pump pulse at a chosen frequency. We shall install a magneto-optic system that will be able to access data on the Faraday spectra both on a quiescent sample and one following a pump pulse as a function of the time delay and temperature. This will be done by combining the existing high levels of expertise in magnetism with that in ultra-fast spectroscopy available in Sheffield in order to investigate the relaxation of the spins and charges in these materials over time scales as short as femtoseconds.
