We propose to develop our successful single crystal growth programme. High quality single crystal samples will be prepared using several different types of preparation system including an infra red image furnace. We will continue to produce samples of several classes of metallic and oxide materials and extend our work to include the growth of borides, carbides and silicides. The materials we will prepare include the charge ordered and CMR manganites, nickelates and cobaltates, frustrated and low dimensional magnets including gamets and pyrochlores, superconducting borocarbides and Ru based oxides, and itinerant ferromagnetic hexaborides and the higher borides that have exotic structures.Our programme is based around three infra red image furnaces. Two halogen bulb systems and one new xenon bulb high temperature unit. The three systems complement one another. They allow us to grow single crystals of many different classes of materials over a very wide range of growth conditions including over-pressures of selected gases up to 10 atmospheres, vacuums down to 10-6 mbar, and temperatures of up to 3000 degrees centigrade. Different techniques will be employed including the floating zone method and growth with solvents.Many of the systems we will study have never been prepared in single crystal form before and considerable efforts will be required to determine and optimise the growth conditions. The crystals will be used in all our EPSRC funded projects and will be made available to collaborating scientists based here in the UK and abroad.
